Suntheanine® vs generic L-theanine vs Matcha tea · which to choose

3 forms · Suntheanine® is the Taiyo patent with canon RCTs · generic pure L-isomer can match · matcha provides bonus polyphenols.

1

Suntheanine® (Taiyo patented)

Pure L-isomer 99%+ patented

Best for

Ideal use: if you want to replicate dose and effects of Owen/Foxe RCTs · focus + caffeine protocol.

Advantages

Form used in 100% of canonical RCTs (Owen 2008, Foxe 2012, Hidese 2023). 99% pure L-isomer (inactive D-theanine <1%). Best available evidence.

Disadvantages

Premium brand · Taiyo royalty increases cost. Cheap brands with "L-theanine" without Suntheanine may be racemic DL- (50% inactive).

2

Generic L-theanine L-isomer

DoNotAge, NOW, Solgar non-Suntheanine

Best for

Ideal use: budget, verifiable COA, don't need Suntheanine precision.

Advantages

More economical than Suntheanine. If COA confirms ≥98% pure L-isomer, functionally equivalent. ~30-40% cheaper.

Disadvantages

COA must specify isomery (not just "L-theanine 200 mg" without detail). Some low-tier brands are hidden racemic DL-.

3

Ceremonial grade matcha tea

Grade A matcha · Camellia sinensis Japan

Best for

Ideal use: daily green tea routine + natural maintenance dose, not for concentrated therapeutic dose.

Advantages

Provides natural L-theanine ~30-70 mg/cup + catechins (EGCG), antioxidants and some caffeine (30-50 mg). Canon natural matrix.

Disadvantages

Variable dose by lot/origin · for 200 mg L-theanine you need 3-7 matcha cups = lots of caffeine. Limited for pre-sleep use.
