Current anti-inflammatory therapies work by sabotaging the inflammasome's controlling mechanisms rather than removing their underlying causes—an approach that functions but risks compromising necessary inflammatory defenses alongside pathological inflammation. Emerging therapies targeting the NLRP3 pathway face substantial challenges in cell-type specificity, retinal drug delivery, and long-term safety, yet they represent a promising window to halt blindness in aging populations without waiting for complete tissue rejuvenation.
