What is taurine

Conditional sulfonated amino acid · 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid · most abundant intracellular after glutamate · synthesized from methionine and cysteine via CDO + CSAD.

Taurine is a sulfonated β-amino acid (not incorporated into proteins like classic α-amino acids). It's the most abundant intracellular free amino acid after glutamate, especially concentrated in heart, retina, muscle, brain and leukocytes. Functions: cellular osmolyte, GABA-A modulator, mitochondrial antioxidant, bile acid conjugation, membrane stabilizer and Ca²⁺ influx modulator. Considered "conditional" because humans synthesize it from methionine + cysteine via CDO/CSAD, but endogenous synthesis is insufficient to maintain optimal levels with age.

The paper that changed the field: Singh-Yadav, Science 2023 demonstrated taurine levels drop ~80% between ages 5 and 60 in humans. Supplementation to rhesus primates for 6 months reversed aging biomarkers (HRV, strength, mitochondrial function, inflammaging markers) and increased mouse healthspan +10-12%. Human STAR-trial (NCT06348017) RCT ongoing 2024-2026 with cardiovascular mortality/morbidity endpoint. Expected result: validation or refutation of human translation of preclinical effect.

Phase 4Endurance athletics

Pre-test acute dose

3-6 g 60-90 min pre-training

Single dose pre-test / competition · peak effect 1-2h lasts ~3-4h. Kurtz 2024 +12% time to exhaustion. Combine with caffeine + Mg = canon endurance stack.

Markers · plasma taurine + HRV + HbA1c

3 biomarkers · useful baseline + post 12 weeks supplementation to verify repletion and response.

Plasma taurine. Optimal range: 50-100 µmol/L (young adult). Low quartile (<30 µmol/L) associated with CV + diabetes risk (Singh-Yadav 2023). Available Synlab, Cerba labs (~40-60 €). Pre/post 12 weeks to verify repletion.

HRV (heart rate variability). Optimal range: RMSSD >40 ms nocturnal wearable. Whoop/Oura/Garmin. Chronic taurine raises HRV +6-12% in 8-12 weeks (parasympathetic tone, antiarrhythmic).

HbA1c + HOMA-IR. Optimal range HbA1c: <5.6% · HOMA-IR <1.5. Falls with taurine 3 g/day × 12 weeks (Maleki 2024 −0.4% HbA1c, −1.2 HOMA-IR). Useful diabetic/prediabetic baseline.

Taurine interactions · safe profile

Specific precaution cases · very high safety profile (no documented human toxicity up to 10 g/day chronic).

Consult healthcare professional if
 • Severe renal insufficiency (eGFR <30): taurine excreted renally · possible accumulation in severe CKD. Adjust dose or consult nephrology. Functional nephrology →
 • Bipolar disorder: taurine modulates GABA-A · theoretically stabilizing effect. Rare cases of mood fluctuation reported. Cautious voluntary use · consult psychiatry.
 • Lithium (pharmacokinetic interaction): taurine may increase plasma lithium levels · monitor lithemia in chronic combo. Space dose 4h.
 • Pregnancy and lactation: limited data · endogenous taurine is high in placenta and breast milk (essential for fetus/infant). Voluntary high-dose supplementation: pause as precaution. Functional gynecology →
 • Children: taurine conditionally essential in infancy. Functional pediatrics can prescribe if documented deficit. No pediatric self-medication.

Taurine frequently asked questions

8 real questions · answers based on Singh-Yadav + Singh 2023 + STAR-trial literature.

Is it the taurine from energy drinks?
Yes · same molecule (crystalline taurine). Red Bull/Monster provide 1-2 g per can. But sugar/caffeine/colorants are problems · pure supplement without extras is the pro form. Zero instant "energy": taurine is osmolyte + mitochondrial, not stimulant.
Does Singh-Yadav Science 2023 work in humans?
Still being demonstrated · STAR-trial (NCT06348017) ongoing 2024-2026 with CV mortality/morbidity endpoint. Current human evidence: inverse association cohorts (Singh-Yadav 2023 n=11,000) + marker RCTs (HbA1c, BP, HF, athletic performance). Lifespan translation pending.
Optimal dose · 1, 3 or 6 g?
1 g: general baseline. 3 g: Attia/Sinclair pro-longevity protocol (Singh 2023 estimated human translation). 4.5-6 g: therapeutic HF, T2D, athletic performance. >6 g: no documented extra benefit.
How long until I notice effects?
Subjective: few feel acute effect · not stimulant. Objective: plasma taurine rises in 4-8 weeks. HRV: 8-12 weeks. HbA1c: 12 weeks (Maleki 2024). Athletics: acute pre-test (Kurtz 2024 1-2h).
Morning or evening?
Split with meals (morning + midday + afternoon). NOT a stimulant · doesn't cause insomnia. Some protocols: nocturnal dose for mild GABA-A modulation effect (improves sleep). Test individually.
Vegan · do I get enough?
Probably not. Dietary taurine is exclusively animal (meat, fish, seafood). Vegans synthesize endogenous but levels <50% omnivores. Supplementation 1-3 g/day canon for vegans. Vegan pediatrics: mandatory.
Pregnancy and lactation?
Endogenous taurine is essential for fetus/infant (high in placenta and milk). Pause voluntary high-dose supplementation during gestation · normal diet with taurine or pediatric supplementation indicated by specialist.
Is it legal in sport?
Yes · taurine is NOT on WADA list. Zero prohibited stimulant. Allowed in competitive athletes. Useful endurance pre-test (Kurtz 2024).
