A bisglycinate chelate is a mineral form in which the metal atom —zinc, magnesium, iron, calcium— is bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine, forming a stable, electrically neutral ring. This structure shields the mineral from dietary antagonists (phytates, tannins, competing minerals) and lets it be absorbed through amino-acid and dipeptide transport pathways rather than only the saturable ionic channels. The result is higher bioavailability and far less gastrointestinal irritation than inorganic salts such as oxides and sulfates.

Chelation is a chemical process in which an organic ligand —here, two molecules of glycine, the smallest amino acid— wraps around the metal ion and locks it inside a stable coordination ring. Because the resulting complex is electrically neutral and low in molecular weight, the mineral travels 'disguised' much like a dipeptide, sidestepping two classic problems of mineral salts: competition for saturable ionic transporters, and the formation of insoluble complexes with dietary phytates and polyphenols.
The isotopic evidence is clearest for magnesium: in patients with ileal resection, absorption from magnesium diglycinate roughly doubled that of magnesium oxide (≈23.5% vs 11.8%), with an earlier enrichment peak consistent with intact uptake via dipeptide transport. For zinc, bisglycinate bioavailability is comparable to or better than inorganic salts and holds up better in the presence of phytic acid.
