What is L-theanine

γ-glutamylethylamide · amino acid found almost exclusively in Camellia sinensis (green tea) and a few mushrooms · ~30-50 mg per quality green tea cup.

L-theanine (γ-glutamylethylamide) is a natural amino acid almost exclusive to green tea (Camellia sinensis) and a few mushrooms (Boletus badius). A cup of high-quality matcha green tea provides 30-50 mg · a cup of black or sencha tea ~20-30 mg. It's structurally similar to glutamate and GABA · crosses the BBB efficiently and modulates neurotransmission: increases GABA, glycine and serotonin; modulates glutamate; and induces alpha brain waves (alert relaxation state) in 30-40 minutes without sedation.

It's the tea component responsible for the «calmly alert» state · counteracts caffeine jitters without reducing cognitive effect. The L-theanine 200 mg + caffeine 100 mg (2:1 ratio) stack is the most studied combo in focus, accuracy and task anxiety reduction (Owen 2008, Foxe 2012). Also useful in ADHD, social anxiety and sleep quality improvement when taken 30-60 min before sleep.

Is it the same as drinking green tea?
Green tea provides ~30-50 mg L-theanine + ~25-35 mg caffeine + catechins (EGCG). For therapeutic dose (200 mg), you'd need 4-6 cups = excess caffeine. Supplementation is more practical for peak dose.
Does it cause drowsiness?
At doses 100-200 mg: no · induces "calm alert" without drowsiness. At doses 400+ mg acute: possible mild relaxation. That's why 200 mg is the canon awake-and-calm dose (Owen 2008) · 400 mg pre-sleep.
